South Carolina’s Democratic presidential primaries on Feb. 29 lived up to the expectation as the bellwether for the Democratic party, crowning Joe Biden with his first primary win. In the weeks and hours preceding this pivotal event, candidates canvassed the state to curry votes from critical constituencies. Marginalized groups exploited the political season to draw candidates’ attention to their causes. Events like the Day of Collective Action for Bodily Autonomy brought supporters together to remind candidates of the need to earn their votes. Candidates and their surrogates made emotional pleas for votes up to and including the day of the election. By night’s end, it was clear that Joe Biden had won the trust of African American voters, and thus the S.C. election.
