Presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Tom Steyer and Pete Buttigieg were all in Columbia, S.C., ahead of the South Carolina Democratic presidential primaries. The polls opened across the state on Saturday, February 29. By the end of the day, Biden had the lead at 48%. Biden gained the pivotal endorsement of U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn in the week before the South Carolina primaries which contributed greatly to Biden’s success. Since 1992, every candidate who has won the South Carolina primaries has secured the Democratic nomination. In 2020, Sanders had won Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada but was untested in a state with a large African-American population. Biden’s win in South Carolina gave him momentum to sweep Super Tuesday on March 3. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
